A Dim Patio is of Little Use! Lighten it up with Tiki Torches

Bamboo tiki torches add an Hawaiian feel to any garden or outside area but the use of citronella tiki torches and regular tiki torches is not limited to just that type of outdoor "island" setting. They fit equally well with any sort of garden or home and serve as a cheap way to illuminate a backyard without electricity and potentially to control annoying insects in the process.

How can the Torches be used and what types are available?

Gas tiki torches are a quick, low maintenance lighting accessory that can be used at a range of social functions including backyard parties, night time weddings, garden receptions, or any special gathering. They can even be used as garden Christmas decorations! (Of course in that case you may want to make sure Santa has an Hawaiian shirt.)

The most widely available tiki torches are the simple bamboo variety that are perfect for summer evenings and can be obtained at any garden center. These cheap tiki torches can be used over and over again if you take good care of them, storing them indoors between uses and being careful not to allow them to get wet as they do tend to rot when damp. (In the interest of safety you should always discard any torch that appears damaged or unstable.)

Metal tiki torches are usually made of copper, bronze or steel. These materials can handle heat and allow for the use of gas tiki torches or those fueled by propane. The latter are more expensive than bamboo tiki lights but are usually more durable and will serve for several summer seasons if cleaned and stored properly. Keep in mind that propane gas is highly flammable so these tiki lights should be positioned more carefully and kept away from any other sources of fire such as a barbeque pit or grill.

Where Tiki Torches can be placed?

A tiki light is usually fixed onto a pointed stand or pole that can be pushed firmly into the ground for stability. Because they are so easy to use, these lights can be placed anywhere in those portions of your garden not covered by concrete or stone our tiles. Be sure the torch sits firmly in the ground and avoid areas where the soil is loose or overly damp.

Tiki lights work well on the periphery of patios because they create a slightly exotic atmosphere in which to enjoy late night outdoor drinks or to serve a barbecue meal. Another good use is to place the torches along a walkway to enhance visibility or to circle the area around a pool with the lights so they can both illuminate the space and reflect nicely on the surface of the water.
