External Lighting - Get a Brief on the Basics
Outdoor lighting fixtures can now-a-days be found in nearly every garden. They make a garden safer and have a decorative purpose, brightening up the garden and helping to protect a property from burglars.
The popularity of low voltage outdoor lighting has significantly grown over the years and outdoor lighting products are a lot cheaper than they were a few years ago. We all know party lights and outdoor string lights but there are many more different types of lighting that can help to enhance the appearance of your garden.
The Purpose of Outdoor Lighting
There are many different reasons why people install outdoor lighting. Some of the main purposes include:
Residential outdoor lighting and garden lights can help you to feel safer when going out into the garden or onto the street at night. Visibility increases and crimes are less likely to take place in well lit areas.
The utility of outdoor lighting helps to brighten up darker areas in your garden. Using such lighting makes it possible to see items to which you may need access after dark or to highlight a step or similar obstacle over which you or a visitor might trip.
In addition to these highly utilitarian uses, outdoor lighting is simply attractive, highlighting features of your garden or yard like plantings, water features, statuary, or illuminating pathways and seating areas.
Types and Styles of Outdoor Lights
There are many different types of outdoor lights making it easy for you to find the right product for your setting and one that will serve the purpose you have in mind. The main types of outdoor lights include:
Up lights
These lights can be used to create a wonderful atmosphere in your garden by installing them under foliage or near bigger plants to create a dramatic upswept or glowing effect. These lights are also great next to a garden path.
Backlights
These lights can be used to create lighter areas with pretty shading in a garden and can be especially effective near large plants, water features, or garden statuary.
Path lights
Path lights are specifically designed to light up a walkway. Some models can actually be incorporated in the path itself while others are placed next to the path. Both are intended to make the walkway more visible in the dark. Path lights can be installed individually or purchased as a set of a given number of lights.
Recessed lights
This type of light is usually installed in the ground but can also be recessed into the eaves of the house or other garden structures such as gazebos or arbors.
Louvered lights
These lights can be used to create dramatic effects in your garden or outdoor area because they are directional and can be easily repositioned to achieve maximum effect.
What are Outdoor Lighting Kits?
Outdoor lighting kits usually include everything you might need to install lights in a certain area in your garden or in any other place outside. Some kits even contain complete sets to light up an entire garden instead of just a smaller area. These kits are widely available in specialized lighting shops or "do it yourself" stores.
